Here’s a sound design tutorial on how to make the classic ‘noise bass’. This bassline is popular in drum and bass, neuro, EDM, bassline house, trap, and other filthy electronic music genres.
Start with a deep bass tone. An 808 sample, sine wave, or filtered square wave are good starting points.
Now layer some stereo noise over the bass. This’ll help it slice through the mix and cut through on smaller speakers. Use a noise generator plugin like ShaperBox’s NoiseShaper, or you can layer noise from a synth or sampler on a second track.
Now distort the noise and bass signals together. The intermodulation distortion will create a unique ‘crunch’.
The effect will vary depending on the noise and drive you use, so try out different noises and distortion types for completely new textures.
And if the effect is too much for your taste, turn the noise right down in the mix, just to add a subtle crispy coating over the bass.
