How to tune a tom with and without a Tune-Bot
1. Download the free Tune-Bot app and decide the fundamental note you want to tune to using the snare drum calculator.
2. Now you’ve decided on your fundamental note, the Tune-Bot app will provide you with your lug frequencies.
3. Place your tom batter head down on a flat, even surface to isolate the heads.
4. If you have a Tune-Bot, place it on the rim of the drum. If you don’t, get a signal generator and generate a sine wave to playback the lug frequency provided by the Tune-Bot app.
5. Tap the head an inch from each lug and you can begin tuning in diagonal pairs to ensure an even balance. You can take large turns at first, but as you approach your desired note, be sure to make small adjustments to the lugs.
6. Once you get close, it’s worth giving the drum a bit of CPR to stretch in the heads and save it detuning straight away. Once you’ve done this, repeat the process until you reach your desired note.
8. Flip your drum over so it’s resonant head down and repeat these steps on the batter head.
