For today’s tutorial treat, we present to you a well-known and respected name in the world of electronic music production: Mr James Holden. Recognized not only for his exciting remixes but also for his solo productions and passion for live performance.
Now head of the Border Community record label that he founded in 2003, it was at the age of 19 that he first started making music, at the turn of the millennium, and he hasn’t stopped since. It wasn’t long before he attracted the attention of massive DJs such as Pete Tong and John Digweed, with his first release called ‘Horizons’. This 1999 trance track was produced entirely using the quirky freeware DAW ‘Jeskola Buzz’. Just like Oliver Lieb and KiNK, we can add James Holden to the list of people who have all managed to create a buzz from this unique application from back in the day. Holden is a prolific remixer having worked his magic for the likes of Depeche Mode, New Order, and Madonna to name a few.
With the world eagerly excited for a whole album from Holden, we had to wait until 2006 until we were finally blessed with ‘The Idiots are Winning’ released on, of course, Border Community. Holden has established himself as a supporter and nurturer of new and fresh talent, paving the way for artists such as Nathan Fake, Fairmont, and Luke Abbott to make their way onto the label and turn into stars.
This week Lucas is looking at Holden’s 2013 album ‘The Inheritors’ by delving into the track ‘Blackpool Late Eighties’. The warm nostalgic title of the track is matched by some gorgeously rich, warm synth sounds – something which DRC is perfect for! Give it a go yourself after you watch this week’s DRC Sound Design Tutorial on ‘How to make the sounds from James Holden – ‘Blackpool Late Eighties’ with DRC’.
